  • Mindful Communication - Book Launch

A new book 'The Art of Mindful Communication: Speaking and Listening with Wisdom and Compassion’ explores the potential of how mindfulness skills can be applied to communication not only to improve connection with others but also as an effective way of enhancing self-care.

In this webinar, the editors' Frits Koster, Jetty Heynekamp, and Victoria Norton will offer a short meditation practice before giving a general outline of their introductory chapter and the six communication programmes. They will be joined by a well-known teacher of Zen Buddhism, psychiatrist, and author Edel Maex, who contributed Chapter 5: Mindfulness and Communication - Creating a Space to Coexist. Edel Maex pays attention to the value of self-care in communication and offers a practical exercise.

Here is the full list of mindful communication programmes in the book, each presented by the developers/authors of the programmes, who work in a range of settings:

    • Nonviolent Communication (by Oren Jay Sofer and Sietske de Haan),
    • The Interpersonal Mindfulness Program (by Erik van den Brink),
    • Green Zone Communication (by Greg Heffron, Esther Hasselman, and Christine Trani),
    • Mindfulness and Communication (by Edel Maex),
    • Deep Listening (by Rosamund Oliver and Chantal Bergers) and
    • Open Dialogue (by Russell Razzaque, Heleen Wadman, Kwok H. Wong and Olaf Galisch).

This book will be of interest to those working in health or social care, education, and community action, and to all who wish to listen and speak with more wisdom and compassion.

"In our digital, disembodied and stressful world, where it’s hard to know whom to trust and to find the time for deeper and more meaningful communication, this book has been sorely needed." - Michael Chaskalson

This event is offered in collaboration with the Mindfulness Network Community Friends (MNCF) - an initiative to engage the wider mindfulness community and reach new audiences. Led by a Committee of Volunteers, supported by the Mindfulness Network, we work together to run a programme of donation-based events and inspiring content. The Committee ensures that the MNCF can best serve everyone by providing opportunities to practice and learn together.

The video is free to watch. The Mindfulness Network welcomes any donations, large or small, which will make a big difference in helping us widen access to mindfulness-based approaches.

The Mindfulness Network and its volunteers take every care in their preparation of events to make sure they are appropriate for the audience. Please be aware that you are choosing to participate in our freely offered events at your own risk. • The video was recorded on 16 May 2023 and is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes long

    • Awareness Centred Deep Listening Training was developed 20 years ago by psychotherapist and meditator Rosamund Oliver. This programme is now offered at universities for example to medical students and  GPs in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Israel. It is very practical and can be learned in a short time by people who have no previous meditation training. In the video, Rosamund gives a very short introduction, describing how the programme came about and where it is taught. Then Chantal Bergers M.D. gives a moving account of how the program changed the way she was practising medicine, transforming how she related to patients whilst at the same time enabling her to care much better for herself.

    • The audio of the " Guided five-minute method", is a practice taught in Awareness Centered Deep Listening Training.
